Meetings next week for Hometown Teams exhibit

Planning has begun for the Hometown Teams Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit in 2018. Volunteers are coming forward to prepare displays of the history of local sports and activities related to this topic.

Two committees, the local exhibition team and the program planning team, will hold specific planning meetings to get a head start and the public is invited to get involved.

The local exhibition team is charged with the planning and designing of local sports displays of each sport or activity. Examples of a display would be volleyball, wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball, roller hockey, swimming, marching and pep band, archery, and Little League.

This team will also include displays for each of the communities in Greene County sharing the history of their sports. There needs to be a contact with a person who knows more about these sports and communities and can put together these displays. This team will meet for an hour Monday, Oct. 23, at 4 pm at the Greene County Historical Museum to begin these plans.

The program planning team is charged with planning presentations and speaker programs for the community leading up to and during the exhibit. The Greene County Historical Society has begun planning speakers for 2018 and there are a number of other opportunities to bring people in to town to work with students or present to the entire community. Ideas have been suggested and now is the time to make the contacts and get dates and locations on the calendar. This team will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 4 pm at the Greene County Historical Museum.

Everyone interested in getting involved in this project is welcome to attend either or both of these meetings. Potential team members are asked to help spread the word to people who should be included to attend these meetings.
